Backgammon – Three Main Plans

In astonishingly simple terms, there are 3 main techniques used. You need to be agile enough to switch strategies almost instantly as the action of the game unfolds.

The Blockade

This comprises of creating a 6-thick wall of checkers, or at least as thick as you can manage, to barricade in the competitor’s pieces that are on your 1-point. This is deemed to be the most acceptable course of action at the start of the game. You can build the wall anyplace inbetween your 11-point and your two-point and then shift it into your home board as the game advances.

The Blitz

This is composed of locking your home board as fast as possible while keeping your challenger on the bar. i.e., if your opponent rolls an early 2 and shifts one piece from your 1-point to your three-point and you then roll a five-five, you will be able to play six/one 6/1 eight/three 8/3. Your competitor is then in serious calamity seeing that they have two checkers on the bar and you have closed half your home board!

The Backgame

This strategy is where you have two or higher checkers in your opponent’s home board. (An anchor is a point filled by at least 2 of your pieces.) It should be played when you are significantly behind as this action much improves your circumstances. The strongest places for anchor spots are near your opponent’s smaller points and either on adjacent points or with a single point in between. Timing is essential for a powerful backgame: besides, there’s no point having 2 nice anchor spots and a complete wall in your own inner board if you are then required to break up this straight away, while your opponent is shifting their checkers home, owing to the fact that you don’t have any other spare pieces to move! In this situation, it is more favorable to have pieces on the bar so that you can maintain your position until your opponent gives you an opportunity to hit, so it will be an excellent idea to try and get your opposer to get them in this case!
