Backgammon – Three Main Schemes

[ English ]

In extraordinarily general terms, there are 3 general plans used. You must be able to switch game plans quickly as the course of the game unfolds.

The Blockade

This is composed of creating a 6-deep wall of checkers, or at a minimum as thick as you are able to achieve, to block in your opponent’s pieces that are on your 1-point. This is considered to be the most adequate strategy at the begining of the game. You can assemble the wall anyplace inbetween your eleven-point and your two-point and then move it into your home board as the match progresses.

The Blitz

This is composed of closing your home board as quickly as possible while keeping your challenger on the bar. For example, if your challenger tosses an early two and shifts one checker from your one-point to your three-point and you then toss a 5-5, you will be able to play 6/1 6/1 8/3 eight/three. Your opponent is now in serious dire straits considering that they have two pieces on the bar and you have locked half your inside board!

The Backgame

This course of action is where you have 2 or more checkers in your competitor’s home board. (An anchor is a point filled by at a minimum 2 of your checkers.) It must be used when you are decidedly behind as it much improves your opportunities. The strongest areas for anchor spots are towards your opponent’s lower points and also on abutting points or with a single point separating them. Timing is essential for a competent backgame: besides, there is no reason having 2 nice anchors and a complete wall in your own home board if you are then required to break apart this right away, while your challenger is getting their checkers home, because you do not have any other spare checkers to move! In this situation, it is more tolerable to have pieces on the bar so that you can preserve your position up till your challenger provides you an opportunity to hit, so it will be a great idea to attempt and get your opponent to hit them in this case!
