The Basics of Backgammon Tactics – Part Two

As we have dicussed in the previous article, Backgammon is a casino game of ability and good luck. The goal is to shift your checkers safely around the board to your home board and at the same time your opposition moves their pieces toward their inside board in the opposing direction. With opposing player checkers heading in opposing directions there is going to be conflict and the need for specific tactics at specific instances. Here are the last two Backgammon tactics to complete your game.

The Priming Game Tactic

If the goal of the blocking strategy is to hamper the opponents ability to shift their pieces, the Priming Game strategy is to completely block any movement of the opponent by constructing a prime – ideally 6 points in a row. The opponent’s chips will either get bumped, or end up in a bad position if he/she ever attempts to leave the wall. The trap of the prime can be established anyplace between point 2 and point 11 in your half of the board. Once you have successfully assembled the prime to stop the movement of the competitor, your competitor doesn’t even get a chance to roll the dice, and you move your pieces and roll the dice again. You’ll win the game for sure.

The Back Game Strategy

The goals of the Back Game strategy and the Blocking Game strategy are similar – to harm your opponent’s positions hoping to boost your chances of winning, however the Back Game tactic utilizes seperate techniques to achieve that. The Back Game strategy is generally employed when you’re far behind your competitor. To participate in Backgammon with this strategy, you need to control two or more points in table, and to hit a blot late in the game. This technique is more difficult than others to play in Backgammon seeing as it requires careful movement of your pieces and how the chips are relocated is partially the outcome of the dice toss.
