Backgammon – 3 General Techniques

In extraordinarily simple terms, there are 3 general plans employed. You want to be agile enough to hop between tactics instantly as the action of the game unfolds.

The Blockade

This consists of creating a 6-deep wall of checkers, or at least as thick as you can manage, to barricade in the opponent’s pieces that are on your 1-point. This is judged to be the most suitable strategy at the begining of the match. You can build the wall anywhere within your 11-point and your two-point and then shift it into your home board as the game progresses.

The Blitz

This involves locking your home board as fast as possible while keeping your competitor on the bar. e.g., if your opposer rolls an early 2 and shifts one checker from your one-point to your 3-point and you then roll a 5-5, you can play six/one six/one 8/3 eight/three. Your opponent is then in big-time calamity because they have two checkers on the bar and you have locked half your inner board!

The Backgame

This tactic is where you have 2 or more checkers in your competitor’s inner board. (An anchor spot is a position filled by at least two of your checkers.) It would be played when you are decidedly behind as this strategy much improves your opportunities. The best places for anchor spots are near your opponent’s smaller points and also on adjacent points or with a single point separating them. Timing is crucial for a powerful backgame: at the end of the day, there’s no reason having 2 nice anchor spots and a complete wall in your own home board if you are then required to break down this straight away, while your opposer is shifting their pieces home, considering that you do not have other spare checkers to shift! In this situation, it’s better to have checkers on the bar so that you are able to maintain your position up till your competitor provides you a chance to hit, so it will be a good idea to attempt and get your opposer to hit them in this case!
