Backgammon – 3 General Plans

[ English ]

In extraordinarily general terms, there are three fundamental tactics used. You need to be agile enough to hop between tactics almost instantly as the course of the match unfolds.

The Blockade

This consists of creating a 6-thick wall of pieces, or at least as deep as you might achieve, to lock in the competitor’s pieces that are located on your 1-point. This is judged to be the most suitable procedure at the begining of the match. You can build the wall anyplace within your eleven-point and your two-point and then shuffle it into your home board as the game progresses.

The Blitz

This involves locking your home board as quickly as as you can while keeping your challenger on the bar. For example, if your competitor tosses an early 2 and moves one piece from your one-point to your 3-point and you then toss a 5-5, you can play six/one 6/1 8/3 8/3. Your opposer is now in serious trouble due to the fact that they have two checkers on the bar and you have closed half your home board!

The Backgame

This tactic is where you have 2 or more checkers in your opponent’s home board. (An anchor spot is a position consisting of at a minimum two of your pieces.) It would be played when you are significantly behind as this action much improves your chances. The best places for anchors are towards your competitor’s lower points and either on abutting points or with one point separating them. Timing is important for a powerful backgame: besides, there’s no reason having two nice anchors and a complete wall in your own inner board if you are then required to break apart this straight away, while your opposer is getting their pieces home, owing to the fact that you don’t have any other spare checkers to shift! In this case, it is more favorable to have pieces on the bar so that you might maintain your position until your competitor provides you a chance to hit, so it can be a wonderful idea to attempt and get your challenger to hit them in this case!
