Backgammon – Three Main Plans

In exceptionally simple terms, there are 3 main techniques used. You need to be able to hop between tactics quickly as the action of the match unfolds.

The Blockade

This is composed of building a 6-deep wall of pieces, or at a minimum as thick as you are able to manage, to block in the competitor’s checkers that are located on your 1-point. This is deemed to be the most acceptable strategy at the begining of the game. You can create the wall anywhere between your eleven-point and your two-point and then shift it into your home board as the match continues.

The Blitz

This is composed of closing your home board as fast as possible while keeping your challenger on the bar. e.g., if your challenger rolls an early two and shifts one piece from your one-point to your three-point and you then roll a five-five, you can play six/one 6/1 8/3 8/3. Your competitor is now in serious trouble because they have two checkers on the bar and you have closed half your home board!

The Backgame

This course of action is where you have two or higher pieces in your opponent’s home board. (An anchor is a position consisting of at least 2 of your checkers.) It needs to be played when you are decidedly behind as it greatly improves your circumstances. The strongest locations for anchor spots are near your competitor’s smaller points and also on adjoining points or with a single point in between. Timing is essential for a competent backgame: at the end of the day, there is no point having 2 nice anchors and a complete wall in your own home board if you are then forced to dismantle this straight away, while your opponent is getting their pieces home, considering that you don’t have any other additional checkers to shift! In this situation, it is better to have pieces on the bar so that you might preserve your position up until your opposer gives you an opportunity to hit, so it may be an excellent idea to try and get your opposer to hit them in this case!
