Backgammon – Three General Techniques

[ English ]

In astonishingly general terms, there are 3 fundamental tactics used. You need to be agile enough to hop between strategies instantly as the course of the match unfolds.

The Blockade

This comprises of building a 6-thick wall of pieces, or at a minimum as deep as you are able to manage, to lock in the opponent’s checkers that are on your 1-point. This is judged to be the most adequate tactic at the begining of the match. You can create the wall anywhere within your eleven-point and your two-point and then move it into your home board as the match continues.

The Blitz

This is composed of locking your home board as quick as as you can while keeping your opposer on the bar. For example, if your competitor rolls an early two and shifts one piece from your one-point to your 3-point and you then roll a five-five, you are able to play 6/1 six/one eight/three 8/3. Your competitor is then in serious dire straits because they have two checkers on the bar and you have closed half your home board!

The Backgame

This course of action is where you have two or higher checkers in your competitor’s inner board. (An anchor spot is a point occupied by at least 2 of your checkers.) It must be used when you are extremely behind as it much improves your chances. The best places for anchor spots are towards your opponent’s lower points and either on abutting points or with a single point separating them. Timing is essential for a competent backgame: besides, there is no reason having two nice anchors and a solid wall in your own inner board if you are then forced to break apart this straight away, while your challenger is shifting their checkers home, because you don’t have any other extra checkers to shift! In this case, it’s better to have checkers on the bar so that you can maintain your position up until your opponent provides you an opportunity to hit, so it can be a good idea to attempt and get your competitor to get them in this case!
