Backgammon – Three General Plans

[ English ]

In astonishingly simple terms, there are 3 general tactics used. You need to be able to hop between techniques almost instantly as the course of the game unfolds.

The Blockade

This involves assembling a 6-deep wall of checkers, or at least as thick as you might achieve, to lock in the competitor’s checkers that are located on your 1-point. This is considered to be the most acceptable strategy at the begining of the match. You can build the wall anywhere within your eleven-point and your two-point and then shift it into your home board as the match advances.

The Blitz

This is composed of locking your home board as quick as as you can while keeping your competitor on the bar. e.g., if your challenger rolls an early two and shifts one checker from your 1-point to your three-point and you then roll a five-five, you can play six/one six/one 8/3 8/3. Your opposer is now in big-time trouble since they have 2 checkers on the bar and you have closed half your home board!

The Backgame

This tactic is where you have 2 or more checkers in your opponent’s home board. (An anchor spot is a point occupied by at a minimum 2 of your pieces.) It should be played when you are significantly behind as this plan greatly improves your opportunities. The better locations for anchors are near your opponent’s lower points and also on adjacent points or with one point separating them. Timing is integral for an effectual backgame: at the end of the day, there is no reason having 2 nice anchors and a complete wall in your own home board if you are then forced to break up this straight away, while your opposer is moving their pieces home, taking into account that you do not have any other additional pieces to move! In this situation, it is more tolerable to have checkers on the bar so that you might preserve your position until your opposer provides you a chance to hit, so it can be a great idea to try and get your challenger to hit them in this situation!
