Backgammon – Three Main Schemes

In very simple terms, there are three basic tactics employed. You need to be agile enough to switch game plans almost instantly as the course of the match unfolds.

The Blockade

This comprises of building a 6-thick wall of pieces, or at a minimum as thick as you can achieve, to barricade in the competitor’s checkers that are on your 1-point. This is deemed to be the most adequate procedure at the start of the match. You can build the wall anyplace within your 11-point and your two-point and then shift it into your home board as the game progresses.

The Blitz

This is composed of locking your home board as quickly as as you can while keeping your opponent on the bar. e.g., if your challenger tosses an early 2 and shifts one piece from your 1-point to your 3-point and you then roll a 5-5, you will be able to play six/one 6/1 8/3 eight/three. Your competitor is then in serious dire straits taking into account that they have two pieces on the bar and you have closed half your inside board!

The Backgame

This strategy is where you have two or higher pieces in your opponent’s home board. (An anchor spot is a position consisting of at a minimum two of your pieces.) It needs to be played when you are significantly behind as it much improves your chances. The best places for anchor spots are near your competitor’s smaller points and also on adjoining points or with a single point in between. Timing is integral for an effective backgame: at the end of the day, there is no reason having two nice anchors and a solid wall in your own home board if you are then required to break down this right away, while your competitor is moving their checkers home, because you don’t have other extra checkers to shift! In this case, it’s more favorable to have checkers on the bar so that you can maintain your position up till your competitor provides you a chance to hit, so it will be a great idea to try and get your challenger to get them in this situation!
