Backgammon – 3 Main Techniques

In very general terms, there are 3 fundamental game plans employed. You need to be able to switch techniques instantly as the course of the match unfolds.

The Blockade

This consists of assembling a 6-deep wall of checkers, or at a minimum as thick as you can achieve, to lock in your competitor’s checkers that are located on your 1-point. This is judged to be the most acceptable procedure at the start of the game. You can create the wall anywhere inbetween your 11-point and your two-point and then shift it into your home board as the game advances.

The Blitz

This involves locking your home board as quickly as possible while keeping your opponent on the bar. For example, if your challenger tosses an early two and shifts one piece from your 1-point to your 3-point and you then roll a 5-5, you can play six/one six/one 8/3 8/3. Your opponent is then in serious calamity taking into account that they have 2 checkers on the bar and you have locked half your home board!

The Backgame

This strategy is where you have two or higher anchors in your competitor’s inner board. (An anchor is a position consisting of at least 2 of your checkers.) It should be employed when you are decidedly behind as it greatly improves your circumstances. The best locations for anchor spots are close to your competitor’s smaller points and also on abutting points or with one point in between. Timing is crucial for an effectual backgame: at the end of the day, there is no reason having two nice anchors and a complete wall in your own inner board if you are then forced to break up this right away, while your opposer is getting their checkers home, owing to the fact that you don’t have any other extra pieces to move! In this case, it is more favorable to have checkers on the bar so that you are able to preserve your position up until your opposer gives you a chance to hit, so it can be an excellent idea to try and get your opposer to get them in this case!
