The Basics of Backgammon Strategies – Part 2

As we dicussed in the last article, Backgammon is a casino game of skill and pure luck. The aim is to shift your chips safely around the board to your inside board and at the same time your opposition moves their checkers toward their inside board in the opposite direction. With opposing player chips moving in opposing directions there is bound to be conflict and the requirement for particular strategies at particular times. Here are the 2 final Backgammon strategies to round out your game.

The Priming Game Plan

If the purpose of the blocking tactic is to slow down the opponent to shift her checkers, the Priming Game tactic is to completely stop any activity of the opponent by building a prime – ideally 6 points in a row. The opponent’s checkers will either get bumped, or end up in a bad position if she at all attempts to escape the wall. The trap of the prime can be established anywhere between point 2 and point 11 in your board. As soon as you’ve successfully constructed the prime to stop the activity of the opponent, the opponent doesn’t even get to toss the dice, and you move your checkers and roll the dice yet again. You’ll win the game for sure.

The Back Game Plan

The objectives of the Back Game plan and the Blocking Game plan are similar – to hinder your opponent’s positions hoping to boost your odds of winning, however the Back Game strategy uses different techniques to do that. The Back Game strategy is generally employed when you are far behind your competitor. To play Backgammon with this tactic, you need to control 2 or more points in table, and to hit a blot late in the game. This tactic is more difficult than others to employ in Backgammon seeing as it needs careful movement of your pieces and how the pieces are moved is partly the outcome of the dice toss.
