Backgammon – 3 Main Schemes

In very general terms, there are three fundamental strategies used. You want to be able to switch techniques instantly as the course of the game unfolds.

The Blockade

This is composed of building a 6-thick wall of pieces, or at a minimum as thick as you might manage, to lock in the competitor’s checkers that are on your 1-point. This is deemed to be the most suitable tactic at the begining of the game. You can create the wall anyplace within your 11-point and your two-point and then move it into your home board as the match progresses.

The Blitz

This consists of closing your home board as quickly as possible while keeping your competitor on the bar. e.g., if your competitor rolls an early two and moves one piece from your 1-point to your 3-point and you then toss a five-five, you will be able to play 6/1 six/one eight/three eight/three. Your challenger is then in serious calamity due to the fact that they have 2 checkers on the bar and you have locked half your home board!

The Backgame

This strategy is where you have two or more anchors in your competitor’s home board. (An anchor is a position occupied by at least two of your pieces.) It would be played when you are extremely behind as this strategy greatly improves your circumstances. The better places for anchors are close to your opponent’s lower points and either on adjacent points or with one point separating them. Timing is crucial for a powerful backgame: besides, there’s no reason having 2 nice anchors and a complete wall in your own home board if you are then required to dismantle this right away, while your opponent is moving their checkers home, considering that you don’t have any other spare pieces to move! In this situation, it’s better to have checkers on the bar so that you are able to preserve your position up till your challenger provides you a chance to hit, so it can be a great idea to attempt and get your opposer to hit them in this situation!
