Backgammon – 3 Basic Strategies

In very simple terms, there are three fundamental plans employed. You must be able to hop between tactics almost instantly as the course of the game unfolds.

The Blockade

This consists of assembling a 6-deep wall of checkers, or at least as thick as you might manage, to barricade in your competitor’s checkers that are on your 1-point. This is considered to be the most acceptable course of action at the start of the match. You can build the wall anyplace inbetween your eleven-point and your two-point and then shift it into your home board as the match advances.

The Blitz

This consists of closing your home board as quickly as as you can while keeping your opponent on the bar. e.g., if your opponent rolls an early 2 and moves one piece from your 1-point to your three-point and you then toss a 5-5, you will be able to play 6/1 six/one eight/three eight/three. Your opposer is now in big-time calamity due to the fact that they have two checkers on the bar and you have closed half your home board!

The Backgame

This plan is where you have 2 or higher checkers in your competitor’s inner board. (An anchor spot is a point filled by at a minimum 2 of your checkers.) It should be employed when you are decidedly behind as this plan much improves your chances. The strongest areas for anchors are near your opponent’s smaller points and either on abutting points or with a single point in between. Timing is critical for a powerful backgame: besides, there is no point having 2 nice anchor spots and a complete wall in your own home board if you are then forced to break down this right away, while your competitor is getting their pieces home, owing to the fact that you do not have any other spare checkers to move! In this case, it’s more favorable to have checkers on the bar so that you might preserve your position up till your challenger provides you an opportunity to hit, so it may be an excellent idea to try and get your opponent to hit them in this case!
