Backgammon – Three General Plans

In very simple terms, there are 3 chief techniques employed. You need to be agile enough to switch techniques almost instantly as the action of the match unfolds.

The Blockade

This consists of creating a 6-thick wall of pieces, or at least as deep as you can achieve, to lock in the opponent’s checkers that are located on your 1-point. This is considered to be the most acceptable course of action at the begining of the match. You can assemble the wall anyplace within your 11-point and your 2-point and then shuffle it into your home board as the game advances.

The Blitz

This is composed of closing your home board as fast as possible while keeping your opposer on the bar. For example, if your challenger rolls an early 2 and moves one piece from your one-point to your three-point and you then roll a 5-5, you will be able to play six/one six/one eight/three 8/3. Your opponent is now in serious calamity seeing that they have 2 pieces on the bar and you have closed half your inside board!

The Backgame

This plan is where you have 2 or more checkers in your opponent’s inner board. (An anchor is a position consisting of at least two of your pieces.) It should be employed when you are decidedly behind as it greatly improves your chances. The strongest areas for anchors are near your competitor’s lower points and also on adjoining points or with a single point in between. Timing is essential for a competent backgame: besides, there is no reason having two nice anchors and a solid wall in your own home board if you are then required to dismantle this straight away, while your opponent is moving their pieces home, taking into account that you don’t have other additional pieces to shift! In this situation, it’s better to have checkers on the bar so that you might preserve your position up till your challenger gives you an opportunity to hit, so it may be an excellent idea to attempt and get your competitor to get them in this situation!
