Backgammon – 3 General Schemes

In extraordinarily general terms, there are three chief techniques used. You want to be able to hop between game plans quickly as the course of the game unfolds.

The Blockade

This is comprised of creating a 6-thick wall of pieces, or at a minimum as thick as you are able to manage, to block in the competitor’s checkers that are on your 1-point. This is judged to be the most adequate course of action at the start of the game. You can assemble the wall anyplace within your 11-point and your 2-point and then move it into your home board as the game continues.

The Blitz

This is comprised of closing your home board as quick as possible while keeping your opposer on the bar. i.e., if your competitor rolls an early two and moves one piece from your 1-point to your three-point and you then roll a five-five, you can play 6/1 six/one eight/three 8/3. Your opponent is then in big-time calamity seeing that they have two pieces on the bar and you have locked half your home board!

The Backgame

This tactic is where you have 2 or higher checkers in your competitor’s home board. (An anchor is a point consisting of at a minimum two of your checkers.) It needs to be played when you are extremely behind as this strategy greatly improves your opportunities. The strongest places for anchors are near your competitor’s smaller points and also on adjoining points or with one point in between. Timing is integral for an effectual backgame: at the end of the day, there is no reason having two nice anchor spots and a complete wall in your own inner board if you are then forced to break up this right away, while your opponent is moving their checkers home, considering that you don’t have other spare checkers to shift! In this case, it is more favorable to have pieces on the bar so that you are able to maintain your position up until your competitor provides you an opportunity to hit, so it can be a wonderful idea to attempt and get your competitor to get them in this situation!
