Backgammon – 3 Basic Techniques

In astonishingly simple terms, there are three fundamental tactics used. You must be able to hop between game plans instantly as the course of the game unfolds.

The Blockade

This comprises of assembling a 6-thick wall of pieces, or at least as thick as you can manage, to barricade in your opponent’s pieces that are on your 1-point. This is judged to be the most adequate tactic at the begining of the game. You can assemble the wall anyplace inbetween your 11-point and your two-point and then move it into your home board as the game progresses.

The Blitz

This is comprised of locking your home board as fast as possible while keeping your opponent on the bar. e.g., if your opponent tosses an early two and moves one checker from your one-point to your three-point and you then toss a 5-5, you can play 6/1 6/1 8/3 eight/three. Your opposer is now in big-time trouble considering that they have 2 checkers on the bar and you have closed half your home board!

The Backgame

This strategy is where you have 2 or higher pieces in your opponent’s inner board. (An anchor is a point consisting of at least two of your pieces.) It would be employed when you are decidedly behind as this strategy greatly improves your chances. The best locations for anchors are close to your competitor’s lower points and also on abutting points or with a single point in between. Timing is important for an effectual backgame: at the end of the day, there’s no reason having 2 nice anchors and a complete wall in your own home board if you are then forced to break down this straight away, while your competitor is shifting their pieces home, seeing that you do not have any other additional checkers to shift! In this situation, it’s more favorable to have pieces on the bar so that you can preserve your position up till your opposer provides you an opportunity to hit, so it may be a wonderful idea to attempt and get your opponent to hit them in this case!
