Backgammon – Three General Strategies

In extraordinarily simple terms, there are three fundamental techniques employed. You need to be agile enough to switch game plans almost instantly as the action of the match unfolds.

The Blockade

This is comprised of building a 6-thick wall of checkers, or at a minimum as thick as you might achieve, to barricade in the competitor’s pieces that are located on your 1-point. This is deemed to be the most acceptable procedure at the begining of the match. You can build the wall anyplace between your 11-point and your 2-point and then move it into your home board as the game continues.

The Blitz

This is comprised of closing your home board as quickly as as you can while keeping your opposer on the bar. i.e., if your opponent rolls an early 2 and shifts one checker from your one-point to your three-point and you then toss a 5-5, you will be able to play 6/1 6/1 eight/three eight/three. Your opponent is then in serious difficulty seeing that they have two pieces on the bar and you have closed half your home board!

The Backgame

This course of action is where you have 2 or more pieces in your opponent’s home board. (An anchor spot is a position filled by at least 2 of your pieces.) It should be employed when you are significantly behind as it much improves your circumstances. The strongest locations for anchor spots are close to your opponent’s lower points and either on adjacent points or with one point separating them. Timing is essential for an effectual backgame: besides, there’s no point having two nice anchor spots and a solid wall in your own inner board if you are then required to dismantle this straight away, while your challenger is moving their pieces home, owing to the fact that you don’t have any other additional pieces to move! In this case, it’s better to have pieces on the bar so that you are able to preserve your position up till your opposer provides you a chance to hit, so it will be a great idea to attempt and get your opposer to get them in this case!
